In the first century BC the cohort replaced the maniple as the working unit of the Roman legion. A cohort brought together a maniple each of the old hastati, principes and triarii, six centuries in all, and a legion had ten of them. A cohort is usually reckoned at about 480 men on paper, though the legions of the civil wars often ran far below strength.
Gaius Julius Caesar's own books, The Gallic War and The Civil War, are our best evidence for how these legions fought. Caesar usually formed a triple line, the acies triplex. In The Civil War he spells out the pattern: four cohorts of each legion in the first line, followed by three and then three more. The second line stood ready to relieve the first or close a gap. The third was a reserve the general could send to a threatened wing or use to turn the enemy's flank. At Pharsalus he took single cohorts from the third line to form a fourth line, which broke Pompey's cavalry.
The plate sets it out with the clarity of a drill book. Four orange-red cohorts stand in front, three deep red ones behind them, three black ones at the back, each drawn as a block of six squares. The Latin names sit beside each line with an English gloss. To the right, a framed detail enlarges one cohort and its six centuries.
