In 48 BC Julius Caesar arrived at Alexandria in pursuit of Pompey, only to be shown Pompey's head. He stayed, and took it upon himself to settle the quarrel between the young Ptolemy XIII and his elder sister Cleopatra VII, who were joint rulers of Egypt and at war with each other. Cleopatra had been driven from the city, and her brother's advisers controlled the palace where Caesar was lodged.
Plutarch tells how she reached him. She took with her only one of her friends, Apollodorus the Sicilian, and came by small boat to the palace at nightfall. Since there was no other way to get in unseen, she stretched herself out in a bedding sack, and Apollodorus tied it up with a strap and carried it through the doors to Caesar. Plutarch says this was the first thing about her that captivated him, as a sign of her daring. The rolled carpet of films and paintings is a modern invention; Plutarch's word means a sack or bundle for bedding. Caesar restored her to the throne, fought a hard war in Alexandria against her brother's forces, and stayed with her into the next year. She bore a son, Ptolemy Caesar, whom the Alexandrians called Caesarion.
The painting is set in the palace at night. Apollodorus, bearded and kneeling, still holds the cord of the opened sack. Cleopatra stands beside it in a draped gown of pale silk, the white ribbon diadem in her dark hair, looking at Caesar with calm amusement. He has risen at his marble table, a scroll in his hand and an oil lamp burning beside him, and stares back at her. Two guards stand in the shadows behind, and a sphinx sits in the half-dark.
