The emperors at Constantinople never called themselves Byzantine. They and their people called themselves Romans, Rhomaioi, and their state the Empire of the Romans; 'Byzantine' is a name given by later scholars. This plate follows their line from the dedication of Constantinople by Constantine I on 11 May 330 to the fall of the city on 29 May 1453, when Constantine XI is said to have died fighting at its walls.
Lists of eastern emperors differ in length, so the plate states its rule: every emperor or empress who reigned over the East in their own right. Junior co-emperors, failed usurpers and the Latin emperors of 1204 to 1261 are not counted; for those years the line runs through the Laskarid emperors at Nicaea. Years run from the day a ruler began to reign in their own right, so Basil II is dated from 976, and second reigns, such as those of Zeno, Justinian II and Isaac II, appear on a line of their own. By that count there were eighty-nine rulers in eleven centuries.
The plate is the companion to Every Emperor of Rome, which covers the emperors from Augustus to 395 and those of the West to 476. It shares that plate's design: a time line across the top, one tick per accession, founders of dynasties in gold, and a medallion at the head of each column. Read down the columns and the long dynasties stand out, the Macedonians, the Komnenoi and the Palaiologoi, with the Twenty Years' Anarchy of 695 to 717 among them. The source line names the historians, from Procopius and Theophanes to Anna Komnene and Sphrantzes.
