The Cataphracts: a painting of armored Byzantine cataphract cavalry with mail-veiled faces and scale-covered horses charging at sunset
The Cataphractsc. AD 965
The Eastern Frontier · c. AD 965

The Iron Wedge Advances

Armored horsemen had a long history in the Roman army, but in the tenth century the Byzantines revived the heavy cataphract as a shock weapon. The Praecepta Militaria, a manual attributed to the emperor Nikephoros II Phokas, who reigned from 963 to 969, describes them closely. Each man wore a coat of lamellar or mail, armored sleeves and a helmet with a mail veil that left only the eyes uncovered. Their horses were protected by heavy coverings of felt or hide. The riders carried iron maces and swords, with lancers among them.

They fought in a blunt wedge, given in the manual as around five hundred men, with archers sheltered inside. Their task was to ride straight at the enemy commander and break the line, with lighter cavalry following to exploit the gap. Under Nikephoros and his successor John I Tzimiskes, Byzantine armies recovered Crete, Cyprus, Cilicia and Antioch, the greatest Roman advance in the East for centuries.

The piece

The painting places us low on rocky ground as the charge comes on. The lead rider and his horse fill the left of the picture, the horse's armored head turned toward us, the scales of its covering catching gold light. More riders stretch back in diagonal ranks into the dust, under a forest of lances and banners. Far behind them the sun is setting over hills and water.
