Boudica of the Iceni: a painting of Boudica with red hair and a gold torc raising her arm in a war chariot, her army behind, a town burning
Boudica of the Icenic. AD 60
Roman Britain · AD 60–61

The Queen Who Burned Londinium

Boudica led the greatest uprising Roman Britain ever faced, in AD 60 or 61. Her husband Prasutagus, king of the Iceni in what is now Norfolk, had ruled as a client of Rome and named the emperor Nero co-heir with his two daughters, hoping to protect his family. According to Tacitus, Roman officials treated the kingdom as plunder instead. Boudica was flogged and her daughters assaulted.

While the governor, Gaius Suetonius Paulinus, was campaigning on the island of Anglesey, the Iceni and the Trinovantes rose. They destroyed Camulodunum, the Roman colony at Colchester, then Londinium and Verulamium, modern London and St Albans. Tacitus puts the dead at some 70,000. Before the final battle, at a site still unknown, Tacitus says she drove from tribe to tribe in a chariot with her daughters in front of her. The Roman line held and broke the British charge. Boudica died soon after, by poison according to Tacitus, of illness according to Cassius Dio.

The piece

Dio, writing more than a century later, gives the description this painting follows: a tall woman with a mass of tawny hair to her hips, a great gold torc, a tunic of many colors and a thick cloak fastened with a brooch, gripping a spear. Here she stands in the chariot almost above us, one arm raised to the storm clouds, while the horses come straight at the viewer. Look past her shoulder to the smoke on the skyline, and the reason for the march is plain.
