The Legend of Belisarius: a painting of a blind old man with a begging bowl and a boy at a city gate, recognized by a soldier in mail and a red cloak

Constantinople · A Byzantine legend

The General at the Gate

Flavius Belisarius was the most famous Roman general of the sixth century. For the emperor Justinian he destroyed the Vandal kingdom in North Africa in 533 and 534, recovered Sicily and Rome from the Ostrogoths, and as an old man drove off a Hunnic raid on Constantinople in 559. His secretary Procopius recorded his campaigns in detail.

In 562 Belisarius was accused of knowing about a plot against the emperor and fell into disgrace. According to the chronicler Theophanes, he was restored to favor the following year, and he died in 565, a few months before Justinian. The tale that the emperor blinded him and that he ended his days begging at a gate first appears centuries later, in the Patria, a Byzantine collection of city lore, and in the twelfth-century writer John Tzetzes. His plea for a coin became a byword in Europe, and in 1781 Jacques-Louis David painted the scene.

The piece

This painting tells the story through glances. The old general turns his blind face up to the light, the tattered purple of his cloak still showing his former rank, his bowl held out. The boy looks up at the soldier, and the soldier stares down at a man he once followed, his hand pressed to his mouth. Behind them, the striped masonry of the gate and the traffic of the street carry on unaware.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
