Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, in the reign of the emperor Titus. The date is traditionally given as 24 August, from the manuscripts of Pliny the Younger's letters, though finds at Pompeii point to an autumn date. Pliny, then seventeen, was staying at Misenum with his uncle, Pliny the Elder, the admiral of the fleet there. Writing to the historian Tacitus years later, he described the cloud as shaped like an umbrella pine, rising on a tall trunk and spreading out at the top.
Pliny the Elder launched warships to rescue people along the coast. He landed at Stabiae, on the south side of the bay, and died there on the shore the next day, overcome as ash and fumes swept the area. Pompeii was buried under meters of ash and pumice; Herculaneum, closer to the volcano, was overwhelmed by searing pyroclastic surges that preserved even wood and food. Both towns lay largely forgotten until excavations began in the 1700s.
The map is a portrait of the whole bay at that moment. The coast is drawn in fine white relief, from the headland of Misenum and the curve of Neapolis to the long ridge of the Sorrento peninsula and Capri beyond. Everything leads the eye up the shore to the volcano, and from its summit the white column rises into the blue.
