The Battle of Zama, fought in 202 BC in what is now Tunisia, ended the Second Punic War. Hannibal, recalled from Italy to defend Carthage, faced Publius Cornelius Scipio, the Roman general who had carried the war to Africa. Polybius describes the battle in Book XV of his Histories.
Hannibal put more than 80 elephants in front, then a first line of mercenaries, a second of African and Carthaginian troops, and, held well back, the veterans who had fought with him in Italy. Scipio drew up his hastati, principes and triarii as usual, but placed each maniple directly behind the one in front instead of covering its gap, so that open lanes ran through the army. His light-armed velites filled the lanes. Gaius Laelius led the Italian cavalry on the left, and the Numidian prince Masinissa his horsemen on the right. Panicked by trumpets and missiles, many elephants ran harmlessly through the lanes or out to the wings. The infantry fight was long and hard, and the return of Laelius and Masinissa against Hannibal's rear decided it.
The plate is laid out on aged paper, Carthaginians in blue at the top, Romans in red below. The eye follows the blue dashed arrows straight down the lanes, past rows of small red blocks, and out behind the army. On either side, long red arrows climb the margins and curl back into Hannibal's veterans.
