The Battle of the Trebia was fought in December 218 BC, a few months after Hannibal crossed the Alps. It took place beside the Trebia, a tributary of the Po, near the Roman colony of Placentia, modern Piacenza. Polybius tells the story in Book III of his Histories.
Hannibal chose his ground with care. The night before, he hid his younger brother Mago with 1,000 infantry and 1,000 cavalry in a watercourse overgrown with brush. At dawn his Numidian horsemen rode up to the Roman camp and drew Sempronius out. The Romans, unfed, waded the swollen river chest-deep in sleet and formed up cold and wet. Polybius gives Sempronius some 16,000 Roman and 20,000 allied infantry, with 4,000 cavalry, against about 20,000 Carthaginian infantry and over 10,000 horse. Hannibal's cavalry and elephants broke the Roman wings, and Mago struck from behind. Some 10,000 Romans in the center forced their way through and reached Placentia; most of the rest were cut down or lost at the river.
The plate sets the armies out on warm, aged paper in red and blue. Read it from the river upward: the red legions with cavalry on each side, Mago's blue square tucked into the stream bed at left, and the dashed blue arrows closing in. One solid red arrow cuts through Hannibal's line and bends away toward Placentia, the one escape of the day.
