The Battle of the Catalaunian Plains was fought in AD 451, traditionally dated to June, somewhere in northeastern Gaul, perhaps near modern Châlons-en-Champagne or Troyes; the exact site has never been found. Attila, king of the Huns, had crossed the Rhine with Huns, Gepids, Ostrogoths and other subject peoples, and was besieging Orléans when the allied army approached and he fell back.
Our main source is Jordanes, a historian writing about a century later. He describes a struggle for a ridge above the plain, which Aetius and the Visigoths seized first. The Visigothic king Theodoric I was killed, but his men fought on, and by nightfall Attila had withdrawn behind a circle of wagons. Jordanes says Attila even had a pyre of horses' saddles prepared, ready to burn himself rather than be taken. Aetius did not destroy him, perhaps to keep the Huns as a counterweight to the Visigoths, and Attila left Gaul. The next year he invaded Italy. Jordanes' figure of 165,000 dead is surely exaggerated.
The painting stands with Aetius on the ridge. The gray-haired general sits his gray horse in scale armor and a red cloak, a dragon standard streaming above him, the windsock banner carried by late Roman cavalry. Below him the infantry lock their painted shields and level their spears. The whole plain beyond is filled with riders in dust and late golden light, the archers in front already drawing their bows.
