The Battle of the Teutoburg Forest was fought in AD 9, probably in September, somewhere in northwest Germany. Publius Quintilius Varus, governor of the new territory beyond the Rhine, was marching three legions, the Seventeenth, Eighteenth and Nineteenth, with auxiliaries and a long baggage train. Arminius, a prince of the Cherusci who held Roman citizenship and had commanded auxiliaries, led him into country of forest and marsh, then turned on him.
Cassius Dio describes heavy rain and wind, slippery ground and a column strung out among wagons and pack animals, attacked from the trees for several days. Dio adds that Varus and his senior officers took their own lives. At Kalkriese, near Osnabrück, archaeologists have found thousands of Roman objects and a turf wall built along a narrow pass, and many scholars identify it as one of the battlefields. Suetonius says Augustus, hearing the news, cried out for Varus to give him back his legions. The three legion numbers were never used again.
The painting puts us in the mud beside the trapped men. A centurion in a crested helmet shouts as he swings his sword, his men pressed behind their shields. Above them a standard-bearer in a lion pelt holds up the golden eagle, the brightest thing in the picture. From the left the warriors pour down out of the trees; to the right, wagons and horses flounder along the flooded track, and the rain closes everything in.
