The Battle of Pydna was fought in June 168 BC on the coastal plain near Pydna in Macedonia, northern Greece, and it ended the Third Macedonian War. An eclipse of the moon the night before, recorded by Livy and Plutarch, dates it to about 22 June. The Roman commander was the consul Lucius Aemilius Paullus; the Macedonian king was Perseus, son of Philip V.
Plutarch, in his Life of Aemilius Paullus, drawing partly on Polybius, gives the most vivid account. Paullus is said to have admitted later that he had never seen anything more terrifying than the phalanx coming on, its front a hedge of pikes. The Romans could not break it and fell back toward the hill Plutarch calls Olocrus. But the long front could not stay even over broken ground. Gaps opened, and Paullus split his troops into small groups and drove them into the breaks and against the exposed sides of the pikemen. Once the Romans were inside the hedge, the long pikes were useless. Livy adds that elephants on the Roman right broke the Macedonian left.
The plate looks down on a sunlit plain of scrub and fields, a river winding along its left edge. Five blue blocks of pikemen stand separated by a stony patch of rough ground, and small red columns push up into the spaces between them. Below, the long red lines of the legions hold at the foot of Mount Olocrus.
