The Battle of Pharsalus was the decisive clash of the civil war between Gaius Julius Caesar and Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, Pompey the Great. It was fought in Thessaly, in central Greece, on 9 August 48 BC by the Roman calendar of the day. Caesar, our main source in Book III of The Civil War, gives Pompey about 45,000 infantry and 7,000 cavalry against his own 22,000 foot and 1,000 horse. His figures may flatter himself, but every account agrees he was outnumbered, above all in cavalry.
Pompey planned to win on his left. His cavalry, with archers and slingers, would sweep around Caesar's right and take the legions from behind. Caesar answered by drawing single cohorts from his third line, six in all, and posting them as a fourth line behind his right wing. When the Pompeian horse charged, these cohorts ran forward and routed it, then fell on the exposed flank of Pompey's army. At the same moment Caesar sent his fresh third line into the front, and Pompey's line gave way. Pompey escaped to Egypt and was murdered there in September.
The plate is an illustrated view over dry, scrub-dotted ground toward blue hills. A river winds along the left edge, labeled the Enipeus, the stream usually identified with the one Caesar says guarded Pompey's right. Pompey's army stands in dark blue, Caesar's in red. A long red arrow curves from the six small blocks of the fourth line up into Pompey's flank.
