The Battle of Lake Trasimene was fought in June 217 BC on the northern shore of Lake Trasimene in Umbria, central Italy. It is often called the largest ambush in military history: a whole Roman army caught on the march. Our main sources are Polybius, Book III, and Livy, Book XXII.
Hannibal had been ravaging the countryside to provoke the consul Gaius Flaminius into a hasty pursuit. Where the road ran through a narrow pass between the hills and the lake, he posted his army on the slopes. According to Polybius, his African and Spanish infantry held the hill at the far end, his slingers and light troops lay along the heights, and his Gauls and cavalry waited near the entrance. Flaminius marched in at dawn without scouting ahead, in a mist so thick, Livy says, that the Romans heard the enemy before they saw them. Polybius puts the Roman dead at about 15,000, many of them driven into the lake. Flaminius was killed, by Livy's account at the hand of an Insubrian horseman named Ducarius.
The plate looks down from high above the lake. Dark wooded hills fill the upper half, and white mist pools over the water below. Small figures of Gauls, slingers and spearmen stand among the rocks. Blue arrows pour down the slopes onto the thin red column on the shore road, while the rising sun warms the far ridge.
