In the summer of 216 BC Rome sent the largest army it had yet fielded against Hannibal: eight legions with their allies, some 80,000 infantry and 6,000 cavalry by Polybius' count, under the consuls Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Gaius Terentius Varro. Hannibal met them on the plain beside the river Aufidus, near the village of Cannae, with about 40,000 infantry and 10,000 cavalry.
He set his Gallic and Spanish infantry in the center in a forward-bulging crescent, with his heavy African infantry held back on each wing. As the legions pressed forward, the crescent gave ground and the Romans crowded into the gap. Then the Africans turned inward on both flanks, while Hasdrubal's cavalry, having routed the Roman horse, swept around to strike the rear. Surrounded, the Romans were cut down where they stood. Polybius says about 70,000 died; Livy gives some 48,000. Paullus fell, and Livy says some eighty senators or men of senatorial rank died with him. Varro escaped with the survivors.
The painting watches the battle from where Hannibal watched it. We stand behind him and his companions on a stony rise, his purple cloak spread over the back of his black horse and a bronze helmet hanging at his saddle. Below, the great Roman mass and its standards are pressed into a ring: bare-chested Gallic warriors in front, ranks with round bronze shields closing from the sides, and clouds of dust where the cavalry rides in behind. Beyond, the river glints under a wide sky.
