Two years after the Goths crossed the Danube, the emperor Valens marched against them in Thrace. On 9 August 378 he found Fritigern's camp, a great circle of wagons, near the city of Adrianople, today Edirne in Turkey. Valens chose not to wait for the western army of his nephew Gratian and attacked in the heat of the afternoon, after a long march.
According to Ammianus Marcellinus, Gothic cavalry returning from foraging fell on the Roman flank. The infantry was pressed so tightly that men could barely raise their arms, and the army was cut down as evening came. Ammianus gives two versions of the emperor's end: that he fell among his soldiers, or that he was carried wounded to a farmhouse, which the Goths set on fire without knowing he was inside.
Adrianople did not end the empire, but it changed it. Valens' successor Theodosius made peace in 382 by settling the Goths inside the frontier under their own leaders, a step with long consequences for the West.
The painting is quiet. The foreground belongs to the dented shield and helmet, lit by the last of the sun. The eye climbs past the fallen standard and the riderless horse to the fires along the wagon line and, far to the right, a single house burning under a column of smoke.
