The Basilica Cistern takes its name from the Basilica, a great colonnaded public court that stood above it on the First Hill of Constantinople. Procopius records that Justinian had the court dug out and lined with columns to hold water for the dry summer months, work usually dated after the Nika riots of AD 532. The cistern measures about 140 by 65 meters, and its brick vaults rest on 336 marble columns in twelve rows.
Many of the columns and capitals were reused from older buildings, which is why they do not match. One famous column is carved all over with a pattern often compared to peacock eyes or tears. Water arrived through the city's aqueducts, and the cistern could hold some 80,000 cubic meters. After the Ottoman conquest it was little known to outsiders until the French scholar Petrus Gyllius explored it by boat in the 1540s.
The painting lights the vast room with a single lantern. The boatman stands near the center, holding his light up as if to read the stone. It warms the column nearest him and lays a broken golden line across the water, while the carved column on the right glows faintly. Everywhere else the columns fade into blue darkness, row behind row, so the room seems to have no end.
