In 205 BC, with Hannibal still in Italy, the Roman Senate consulted the Sibylline Books. Livy reports that the verses foretold victory if the Idaean Mother were brought from Asia Minor. Envoys went to King Attalus of Pergamum, who helped them obtain the goddess's sacred stone, which Livy says came from Pessinus in Phrygia. The young Publius Cornelius Scipio Nasica, judged the best man in Rome, was chosen to receive her.
Livy says the matrons of Rome passed the goddess from hand to hand up to the Palatine, where she was housed in the Temple of Victory until her own temple was dedicated in 191 BC. Her festival, the Megalesia, was celebrated each April with games and plays. Ovid adds the most famous episode. When the ship stuck in the Tiber, Claudia Quinta, whose virtue gossip had questioned, is said to have prayed aloud and pulled it free herself, proving her chastity before the crowd.
The painting is built on a single taut line. The rope runs from the woman's braced hands, low on the left, to the garlanded prow on the right. The crowd behind her holds branches, lamps and banners in the morning mist. On deck, priests in tall caps strike cymbals and drums around a canopy, and under it, half hidden by smoke and flowers, sits the dark stone of the goddess.
