By the time Gaius Julius Caesar took command in Gaul in 58 BC, the legion had changed. Its heavy infantry were now armed alike, with mail, a bronze helmet, an oval shield, throwing spears and a short sword, and the cohort had replaced the maniple as the unit of battle. Light troops and cavalry came from allies and hired men. In 57 BC, Caesar writes, he sent Numidians, Cretan archers and Balearic slingers to help a besieged town of the Remi.
Caesar's own accounts are full of centurions. He names Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus, rivals who saved each other's lives in a fight against the Nervii, and Gaius Crastinus, a veteran who led the charge at Pharsalus and was killed there. His legions were often far below strength. At Pharsalus in 48 BC, he says, his 80 cohorts in the line numbered 22,000 men, while he puts the army of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus at 45,000.
The plate sets the soldiers in order of weight, from the armored legionary and the plumed centurion to the bare-headed archer and slinger in plain tunics. Below, the battle line is drawn in red, darker red and black, with the skirmishers as a loose scatter of dots in front and the cavalry as two open squares at the ends of the first line.
