In AD 9 the Roman governor Publius Quinctilius Varus was marching three legions, the Seventeenth, Eighteenth and Nineteenth, with their auxiliaries and baggage through northwest Germany. His trusted adviser was Arminius, a young noble of the Cherusci. Velleius Paterculus, who may have known him, says Arminius had earned Roman citizenship and equestrian rank in Roman service. A Cheruscan chief named Segestes warned Varus of a plot, but Varus would not believe him.
Cassius Dio describes what followed: a column strung out on forest tracks, heavy rain and wind, trees felled across the way, and German warriors attacking from cover again and again over several days. Varus took his own life, and the three legions were wiped out. Their numbers were never used again. Many archaeologists identify a key part of the battlefield at Kalkriese, near Osnabrück. Suetonius reports that Augustus would beat his head against a door, crying out for Varus to give him back his legions.
The painting is set high in the trees above the road. Arminius kneels at the edge of the drop, his hair tied in a knot, looking down, his open hand signaling his men to wait. Behind him, warriors with spears and shields are spread up the slope in the rain. The eye follows his gaze between the trunks to the column below: tiny figures, covered wagons, red banners, all moving forward into the forest.
