Arminius was born around 18 BC into the ruling family of the Cherusci, a Germanic people living near the river Weser. Like other sons of allied chiefs, he served with the Roman army, commanding a unit of his countrymen. Velleius Paterculus, who served in Germany in these years, says he had won Roman citizenship and the rank of a knight, and calls him quicker of mind than barbarians usually were.
In AD 9 he was back in Germania and in the confidence of its governor, Publius Quinctilius Varus. Another Cheruscan noble, Segestes, warned Varus that Arminius was plotting, but Varus would not listen. That autumn Arminius led the Roman army, three legions with their auxiliaries, into a trap in the Teutoburg Forest, where it was destroyed over several days.
Arminius survived the punishing campaigns of Germanicus that followed, and Rome gave up its plans to rule the land as far as the Elbe. He was murdered by his own kinsmen around AD 21, and Tacitus calls him, without doubt, the liberator of Germany.
The print sets two figures in one forest. In front, in fine dark line, stands the Roman officer, mail on his shoulders and a short sword at his side, turning to meet our eye with a guarded look. Behind him rises the same face, larger and wilder, hair loose, wrapped in fur and holding a spear against the pines. The red between the trunks binds them together, and it is not clear which is the shadow of the other.
