The Via Appia, or Appian Way, was the first of Rome's great roads. It was begun in 312 BC by the censor Appius Claudius Caecus, who in the same years built Rome's first aqueduct, and it ran south-east to Capua. By the early second century BC it reached Brundisium, modern Brindisi, the port for Greece and the East. The poet Statius called it the queen of long roads.
Its surface was laid with close-fitting blocks of hard volcanic stone over packed foundations, with curbs on either side, and milestones marked the distance from Rome. Along the first miles out of the city stood tombs of every size, because the law of the Twelve Tables forbade burial within the city. The best known, the round tomb of Caecilia Metella, was built around 30 BC and still stands.
The road also saw darker days. After the defeat of Spartacus in 71 BC, according to the historian Appian, some 6,000 captured rebels were crucified along the road from Capua to Rome.
The painting looks down the paved road toward a low sun. On the left rises a great round tomb ringed with a carved garland frieze, its form recalling the tomb of Caecilia Metella. Monuments with carved figures stand in the grass, pines lean over the road, and the long shadows lead the eye to the traveler, his cart, and the aqueduct and city glowing in the distance.
