Apollo, God of Music: an illustration of Apollo playing a lyre under a tree with a raven above, his music streaming out in ribbons with birds and swans
Apollo, God of MusicMyth
The Palatine Hill · Rome

The God Who Kept His Greek Name

Unlike most Greek gods, Apollo had no Latin equivalent to absorb him, and he entered Roman religion under his Greek name. Livy records that a temple was vowed to Apollo in 433 BC, during a plague, and dedicated two years later outside the old city walls. For centuries he was honored in Rome chiefly as a god of healing and prophecy, and the Ludi Apollinares, games in his honor, began in 212 BC during the war with Hannibal.

His great moment came with Augustus, who honored Apollo as the god of his victory at Actium in 31 BC and dedicated a temple to him on the Palatine in 28 BC, beside his own house. According to Suetonius, the Sibylline Books were later kept beneath the base of its statue of the god. The laurel of Apollo's wreath belongs to a Greek story retold by Ovid, in which the nymph Daphne escaped the god by turning into a laurel tree. The raven above him, in another of Ovid's tales, was turned from white to black for bringing Apollo bad news.

The piece

The illustration opens from left to right. The god sits in the shade at the left, absorbed in the strings, the black raven watching from the branch above. Out of the lyre pours a broad ribbon of vermilion, cobalt and gold, patterned with waves, meanders and leaf sprays, with birds and swans flying along it and gold leaves falling from its end. Below, the land opens toward the sea: cypresses, a calm bay, and a round temple on a far hill under a rising sun.

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
