Titus Aurelius Antoninus was a wealthy senator in his early fifties when Hadrian adopted him in AD 138, on the condition that he in turn adopt the young Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. He became emperor that July. The Senate was reluctant to honor Hadrian, who had died on bad terms with it, but Antoninus insisted that his adoptive father be deified. According to the Historia Augusta, this was one reason he was called Pius.
He never left Italy as emperor. The frontiers were held by his governors, and in Britain the army built the Antonine Wall of turf across central Scotland. At home he governed carefully and left a full treasury. When his wife Faustina died in AD 140 he built her a temple in the Forum, later dedicated to them both; its columns still stand. Marcus Aurelius, in his Meditations, remembers his adoptive father as gentle, steady and unhurried, and as devout without superstition.
The painting is built around an old Roman act of worship. A libation of wine was poured for the gods, often with incense burned on the altar fire. Here the emperor's head is veiled and his face lowered, and the wine falls in a dark line onto the carved marble. Light gathers on the cream folds of his toga, while the boy at his side, holding the incense box, looks up at him. Behind them rise the columns of a temple, an olive tree and the cypresses of the hills.
