The Sack of Rome in AD 410 was the work of Alaric, king of the Visigoths, a commander who had served the empire and had long demanded land and rank for his people. The western emperor Honorius, safe behind the marshes of Ravenna, refused his terms, and Alaric besieged Rome three times in three years. On the night of 24 August AD 410 his men entered by the Salarian Gate. Later writers disagree on how: Procopius offers two stories of treachery, and both may be legend.
For three days the Goths looted the city. The Christian writer Orosius says Alaric ordered that those who took refuge in holy places, above all the basilicas of the apostles Peter and Paul, should be left unharmed. Buildings burned and many people were killed or carried off, yet the city was not destroyed. It was the first time Rome had fallen to a foreign enemy since the Gauls, some eight hundred years before. The shock ran across the Mediterranean, and Augustine of Hippo began his City of God partly to answer pagans who blamed the disaster on the abandonment of the old gods. Alaric died in southern Italy within months.
The painting is lit almost entirely by fire. Torches pour through the arch of the gate behind the leader on his black horse, while a temple burns in the distance beyond. In the foreground, families scatter to the sides of the street. Only the old man in the toga, his back to us, stands facing the riders.
