Alaric at the Salarian Gate: a painting of Alaric on horseback as his Goths march by torchlight through a gate between round towers into burning Rome
Alaric at the Salarian GateAD 410
The Salarian Gate, Rome · AD 410

The Gate That Opened

Alaric had served Rome as a commander of Gothic troops and spent years trying to win land and rank for his people from the western court. When the emperor Honorius, safe in Ravenna, refused his terms, Alaric blockaded Rome in 408 and again in 409, when he set up an emperor of his own. In the summer of 410, negotiations broke down once more.

On 24 August the Goths entered by the Salarian Gate in the city's northern walls. Procopius gives two stories of how: that Gothic youths, given to Roman nobles as slaves, opened it, or that a noblewoman named Proba ordered it opened out of pity for the starving people. Houses near the gate were set on fire, among them the old house of the historian Sallust. Orosius, a Christian writer, stresses that Alaric ordered the churches of the apostles Peter and Paul to be respected as sanctuaries.

The sack lasted three days, and its physical damage was small beside the shock it caused. In Bethlehem, Jerome wrote that the city which had taken the whole world was itself taken. In North Africa, Augustine began The City of God in response.

The piece

The painting is seen from behind the army. A wet stone road leads past soldiers with round shields and torches to the pale arch between the towers. The eye goes through it, as the Goths do, to the burning city beyond.
