Germanicus Julius Caesar was a grandson of Mark Antony and a great-nephew of Augustus, who had made Tiberius adopt him as heir. He won fame and the devotion of his soldiers in Germania, and was then sent east with wide powers. In October AD 19 he fell ill and died at Antioch, in Syria. He believed he had been poisoned by the governor of Syria, Gnaeus Calpurnius Piso, with whom he had quarreled; whether he was remains unknown.
His widow, Agrippina the Elder, a granddaughter of Augustus, carried his ashes home by sea in winter. Tacitus describes her landing at Brundisium: the harbor walls, the rooftops and every place with a view packed with mourners, and Agrippina stepping from the ship with two of her children, holding the funeral urn, her eyes cast down, as the crowd groaned as one. Tacitus adds that Tiberius and his mother Livia stayed out of public view.
Agrippina never forgave Tiberius, and her open hostility ended in her exile and death. The scene became a favorite of later painters, among them Benjamin West, whose version of 1768 is at Yale.
The print reads from left to right, as the procession does. The dark hull and rigging of the ship fill the left edge; Agrippina comes down the gangplank veiled in black, the urn catching the light; the mourners stand in a long bowed line that runs off the right edge. Above the harbor, Germanicus rises out of the red haze in a cuirass with an eagle on the chest, too large and too far away to reach.
