roman-funeral-ancestor-masks
The Masks of the Ancestors

The Roman Forum, on a gray day of mourning. A bier draped in purple and gold is carried in from the left. Ahead of it walk men in togas wearing pale masks of the family's great dead, with attendants bearing the rods of office. Women in black raise their arms in lament, and horn players lead the way.

The Greek historian Polybius, who lived in Rome in the second century BC, describes the custom. Noble families kept wax masks of ancestors who had held high office. At a funeral, men of similar build wore them, dressed in the robes of each ancestor's highest rank, and went before the body to the Rostra, where a son or kinsman praised the dead.

For Polybius no sight could stir an ambitious young man more: a family's whole line of honor, alive again.

Framed canvas: cotton-polyester canvas on FSC-certified wood stretcher bars, set in a slim floating frame in black, dark wood or natural wood

Canvas: the same canvas on a slim 2 cm (3/4″) stretcher, without a frame

Printed edge to edge and around the sides, so no white canvas shows

Arrives ready to hang, with hanging hardware included

Sizes: 18x12″, 24x16″ and 36x24″

Free shipping.
