roman-corvus-boarding-bridge
Corvus, Rome's Boarding Bridge

The corvus, Rome's boarding bridge, drawn as a blueprint. A gangway 36 feet long and four feet wide hangs from a pole on the bow of a Roman warship, held up by a pulley and rope. Knee-high rails run along both sides, and a heavy iron spike juts from the far end. Dropped onto an enemy deck, the spike held the two ships together.

Then Roman soldiers ran across and fought as if on land. The device was first used at the Battle of Mylae, off Sicily, in 260 BC.

Rome was new to war at sea.
