druid-mistletoe-ritual
The Mistletoe

A sacred oak grove in Gaul, under a young crescent moon. A druid in white has climbed into an ancient oak and cuts a bough of mistletoe with a golden sickle. Below, four more druids stretch a white cloth to catch it. Two white bulls with wreathed horns wait for the sacrifice, and the people stand around in silence.

This rite is known from a single ancient source: Pliny the Elder, writing around AD 77. He says the druids held nothing more sacred than mistletoe growing on an oak, and he describes the ceremony step by step.

Almost every detail in the painting comes from his account.
