decius-mus-devotio
The Sacrifice of Decius Mus

Near Mount Vesuvius, 340 BC. Between two armies, a Roman consul rides alone toward the enemy, his toga drawn over his head and a spear raised. Behind him a priest on a mound lifts both arms. The two lines look almost alike: Romans and Latins, Livy notes, fought with the same arms and order.

According to Livy, the consul Publius Decius Mus saw his wing giving way and had the pontifex Marcus Valerius dictate the words of a devotio. He offered his own life, with the enemy army, to the gods of the dead in return for a Roman victory. He rode into the Latin ranks and was killed, and the battle turned.

Livy wrote three centuries later, and the story may be partly legend.
